5 CHARACTERISTICS OF A GOOD GOAL

By  |

A lot of people are overwhelmed by the lots of work they do. They feel like they are working too hard and yet have nothing to show for it. If you are that person, have you taken time to write down your thoughts? That should be your first step.

Write down all that you want to be or achieve, both personal (work, health, spiritual etc) and lifetime goals.

Done that? Now, we are going to talk about the characteristics of a good goal and you check out your goals and see if they align with what is here.

SPECIFIC:

Your goal must be specific. This is where we start to get it wrong when we start dreaming of all the good stuff we want. You must be able to state what you want and ask yourself some necessary questions. For instance, your goal is to increase income by 200%. You should ask how do I this, what do I need to do to increase income, do I work on my products or services, you might consider sending a survey to your customers to know how they feel about your brand, do I create a new product or service? Be very specific

MEASURABLE:

The next thing is to make sure your goals are measurable and meaningful. How do you know you have achieved a goal? Is it by what you hear, feel or touch? Are the results track able? For instance, you quit drinking alcohol because you just joined the Fitfam club. That’s a measurable and meaningful goal. Don’t measure your goal by happy you are, there has to be a physical result.

ATTAINABLE:

Make sure your goals are achievable. I remember when I said when I wanted to make 100,000 dollars a month, lol. Now, not like it was impossible but I was supposed to start small and then grow. So, make sure your goals don’t consume your time, efforts and energy. Take it bit by bit and then shoot for the stars. Make sure you have the time and resources to carry out a goal or it might fail.

REALISTIC:

Your goals should be relevant and very realistic. Does it really match your objectives? Or are you taking on so much that it seems like you are trying to build a house on water? For example, if my goal is to be able to work and take care of my kids. My goal will NOT be to own 3 multi nationals, own 2 part time jobs, and be famous. I don’t see where my kids get to enjoy me. So, set goals that are relevant to your objectives and very realistic.

TIME BOUND:

A goal without a deadline is just a dream. If you want to stick to achieving your goals, make sure they have a deadline. It motivates you to work towards your goal. For instance, I will buy a car by December 25, 2016.

Notice the deadline? Notice the positive word “will”? Feels like it’s certain, right? That’s the power of goal setting. So, from here, your next question will be “How much is the car?” “How much do I need to make or save every month to achieve this?

Also, keep the time realistic. Don’t beat yourself up about achieving a lot in a few seconds.

There it is! Leave me a comment with a time bound goal of yours. Set S.M.A.R.T goals today.
