5 THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE GETTING A TEAM

By  |

I was going through my box and I came across a book where I had names of my team mates and then some memories came flashing. I remembered I had messed up a bit some months back. I remembered how excited I was about getting team mates thinking I was going to be free especially as a startup. I never knew it was only the beginning of responsibilities to come.

I remember how it was difficult to get them on an online meeting (we do that because we all leave in far ends of Lagos). I knew I was losing them and I didn’t want to because they were quite interesting and inspiring people. I talked to Darlington from this post and he advised I should take a break. That break was the best thing that happened to me that period because it helped me get back on track. So, let me share with you 5 things you should consider before getting a team.

  1. BE CLEAR ABOUT THE IDEA

I was into modeling at that time and the truth is I was still finding ways to survive on my own and I had to bring people into my unshaped world. I will advise that you should be really clear about the idea, what problem your idea is solving and how it will make profits. And I know it’s your idea but please be very realistic about it.

  1. BE CLEAR ABOUT YOUR GOALS

What do you hope to achieve in 2-5 years? How long will it take you to start making profits? Who do you need to collaborate with? Who is your target market? Be really clear about your goals. I will advise you meet a business analyst to help you with these things. They are very thorough about business facts.

  1. STATE YOUR WORKING TERMS

What exactly are the team mates going to be doing? What time do they report to the office and when do they leave? If you all are working from different places, how do they report to you? How will they be paid? Weekly, monthly, or on commission? Are there reward systems? Any punishment for a team mate who faults?

  1. ACCEPT YOUR FLAWS

Now, some of us are entrepreneurs but it doesn’t mean we are leaders. You have to learn the dos and don’ts of leadership and find out your style of leadership. You really don’t want to be seen as a leader who is bad with people. People skills should be one of the many skills you should possess. Your team mates will be happy if you possess this skill or at least 20% happy.

  1. AVOID GETTING INVOLVED IN A LOT

I was guilty of this. I was always so excited with new ideas and I wasted no time in setting them all up. The bad thing was that my ideas didn’t match each other. They were all from different industries and I was burdening my team mates with a lot. I was stressing them mentally because they were confused and didn’t know which brand they were working with anymore. Don’t ever fall into this. If you must, then get different team mates for each. I think Tech guys are the only ones excused…I think.

Just so I will know, what challenges do you face having team mates?

Your comments mean a lot to me.
