5 TIPS TO CHOOSE A DOMAIN NAME FOR YOUR BLOG

By  |

I guess you are reading this post because you are thinking of starting up a blog. Congratulations for even thinking it. You have taken the bold step to think about it in the first place. Owning a blog is easy and isn’t by magic. Nonetheless, there are things you have to put into consideration and one of those things is your domain name. Your domain is more like your identity and that’s how you will get found on the Internet.

To choose a domain name, you have to think hard so you don’t go changing names later and confusing your readers. I always advice that you come up with lots of options and ask friends and family for the one they prefer. Let’s do this!

EASY TO PRONOUNCE AND SPELL

You don’t want people pronouncing the name of your blog wrongly simply because you trying to be stylish with names. Don’t try to get stylish with your domain name. www.hexwaized.com will be more difficult to pronounce or spell. Meanwhile, www.xyz.com is simple and straight to the point.

EASY TO REMEMBER

If it’s difficult to pronounce, then don’t expect it to be remembered. People don’t have time to spend remembering those who make life difficult for them. Use easy everyday words or short catchy words that will stick.

NOT TOO LONG

thediaryofabeautifulhexwaized.com is just a huge danger waiting to happen. Even if it’s your name, I don’t encourage things like olayisadeokonkwoapparrel.com. *Can we all laugh in Chinese*. The shorter the word, the better. IModelAfrica is a 6 syllable word but if you can go less than that, I will recommend that. If it has to be 6 syllables, please ensure that the words coming together are short and words that can be remembered easily.

PASS THE MESSAGE

Your domain name should totally relate with what you do. Don’t go using the “fashionhexwaized.com” for a food content. I love my domain name because to an extent I can use it for a couple of sectors and it will stick. That was why switching from modeling to writing for you, my amazing she boss, wasn’t difficult. I still had to keep the name because it fits. We all model or represent Africa, don’t we?

CATCHY AND INTERESTING

After all said and done, make sure it is catchy. Catchy sticks easily. Even if it’s a 7 syllable word, people will remember it because it is catchy and unique. Make them perceive the stew (domain name) before tasting it (the blog)

Once you have started blogging, you might want to worry a bit about your graphic designs but worry not. I wrote on apps that can help you design like a pro.

PS: All attempts to remind you of how expensive tomatoes are in the market isn’t intentional.

Comment with your blog name, so I can go check it out. If you are an aspiring blogger, let me know what you are struggling with.

Disclaimer: All names and web addresses mentioned in this post are just examples. I do not know of their existence and have no intention of putting anyone in a bad light.
